Obiettivo The PIPPIN project is an essential part of a strategic programme directed at deriving competitive advantage from improved information management processes across the lifecycle of process plant assets. It aims to measure the business benefit from the improved utilisation and exchange of specific information between the design contractor and the plant owner-operator in real business situations. The results of the project are of three types a) the documentation and measurement of the business benefit and how it was achieved b) the software products that were developed to realise the benefit c) technical documents, which include the specifications of the requirements and the solutions. The project is driven by the business requirement to improve information management processes, in particular ensuring lifetime data availability by standardising the meaning and relationships of data. The project builds on the work done to develop the Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data (STEP - ISO 10303) and its application to the needs of the Process Plant Lifecycle. In particular it will develop prototype software which can be quickly converted to full function products, and utilise these on real live industrial products. These products will include Application Program Interfaces capable of producing STEP files to some conformance class of AP 221 and AP 227: but will also include an implementation of a database design as a data repository. Previous proof of concept demonstrators based on realistic business scenarios have indicated the potential for major business benefits in terms of reduced time to market, improved quality of information, and reduction in costs. The PIPPIN project will demonstrate these benefits in a real industrial environment using real software. This will have a major impact on owner-operators who will demand that engineering contractors deliver STEP compliant data. This will stimulate the market for STEP compliant products and provide the impetus to accelerate the development and implementation of STEP in other areas of the Process and Process Plant industries.
