A hypermedia platform combining an organisational framework and a methodology for the exploitation and promotion of tourism in Europe of 2000

Objective

The principal aim is to develop a business-centred approach for the production of multimedia applications promoting tourism. The key point is that the organisational structure will be planned in such a way as to enable the applications to be self-financing.

The overall objectives are:

-
To set up six pilot sites which will address the business and technical aspects of producing and distributing multimedia applications for the promotion of tourism.
-
To define an organisational and business methodology by which organisations in the tourism industry and other related organisations can establish a business association and provide the funds for the development of multimedia applications for tourism.
-
To validate the organisational and business methodology in each pilot site.
-
To organise the collection, preparation and commercial exploitation of a multimedia asset database in each pilot site.
-
To develop one multimedia application in each pilot site using the technological results of the project, and distribute them.

To a great extent the project will be based on existing commercial tools as well as existing R&D results. These will be used to develop the services required for the creation of multimedia databases for tourism and the development of applications.

The specific objectives within this general framework are:

-
To define a general-purpose model for multimedia applications concerned with the promotion of tourism for a given region.
-
To develop a User Interface Template Library (UITL) for tourism-related multimedia applications.
-
To develop an Asset Handling Facility (AHF) for managing assets involved in the production of tourism-related applications.
-
To experiment with tools translating multimedia applications created with commercial authoring tools into one or more of the HyTime, MHEG standards for multimedia interchange.

Work on the project will include definition of user and system requirements, involving a detailed marketing analysis for the role of multimedia in tourism and the definition of the services that the project will provide. This will provide the basis for the technical work in the project.

The technical development work will result in the UITL (User Interface Template Library ) for tourism applications and the AHF (Asset Handling Facility). The HYPERTOUR business methodology will be developed and used in the project itself, and may also be immediately exploited in other areas.

In the final phase of the project, the applications will be distributed and evaluated and the final exploitation plans will be developed.
