Advancing attosecond metrology

Ziel

Dynamic studies of ultra-fast atomic and molecular processes in an attosecond time scale, call for tools and techniques with extremely high temporal resolution. Recent advances in ultra-fast optics have made possible the experimental demonstration of pulses lasting only a few hundreds of attoseconds in the XUV range of the spectrum opening the door to attophysics.

A series of proof-of- principle experiments, have demonstrated that concepts utilizing these pulses, could push the frontiers of modern spectroscopy, allowing time resolved studies of ultra-fast phenomena in atoms and molecules establishing the so- called Attosecond Metrology. The principal objective of this project, is to advance the state of the art of these tools by generating ready to use isolated attosecond pulses with even shorter pulse durations 100 as at even higher energies reaching the X-ray regime 500eV-2 KeV allowing studies in the interior of the atoms, where the dominant process have remained dynamically unexplored up to date. To reach these objectives, novel developments in laser light sources, laser light metrology based on the existing attosecond pulses, and x-ray optics will play a key role.
