Spectral methods and microphysics for studying the evolution of rotating proto-neutron stars

Obiettivo

This project aims at studying the evolution of rotating protoneutron stars (PNS) through numerical simulations based on very precise algorithms (the so-called spectral methods) and realistic microphysics. Such theoretical studies are strongly needed for th e interpretation of data from the gravitational waves (GW) detectors (VIRGO, etc). Indeed, the expected signal to noise ratios are very small, so an accurate evaluation of the waveforms is necessary, in particular, PNSs are the progenitors of most compact objects that are potential sources of GW. PNSs are also the results of the merging of neutron stars. The main technical issue will be to solve diffusion-like equations (for chemical diffusion and heat transfer) in rotating and contracting backgrounds. The spectral methods will be the key tool to solve the partial differential equations, while microphysics will be a crucial input to get realistic diffusion coefficients in agreement with the physics occuring in the dense nuclear matter of PNSs.
