Astronomy Fellowships in Italy

Final Report Summary - ASTROFIT (Astronomy Fellowships in Italy)

AstroFIt, Astronomy Fellowships in Italy (www.astrofit.inaf.it) is a 54 months long programme, structured in two calls for proposals.

The programme supports the mobility of 14 talented and experienced researchers to National Institute for Astrophysics for a period of 2 years.

The National Institute for Astrophysics (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica – INAF) is the Italian public research organization that promotes, performs and coordinates astrophysics and astronomy research in Italy and cooperates with universities and other national and international organizations.
INAF is articulated into 17 research structures distributed all over the country, plus a number of observing facilities and infrastructures in Italy and abroad: the National Telescope Galileo (TNG), located in La Palma, Canary Islands, the Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona, the Sardinia RadioTelescope (SRT).

Applicants were free to choose within one or more (in case of interdisciplinary projects) scientific areas which INAF research activities are related to:

- Galaxies and Cosmology
- Stars, Stellar Population and Interstellar medium
- Sun and Solar System
- Relativistic and Particle Astrophysics
- Advanced Technology and Instrumentation

Each candidate identified the most suitable INAF structure where carrying out her/his proposed project and indicated a scientific staff member in the host structure as contact point and supervisor.

List of the INAF Host Structures in Italy:

AstroFIt programme supports two types of mobility:
Incoming Mobility: addressed to applicants that have not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the call deadline.

Reintegration fellowships: addressed to Italian nationals who have carried out research in a Third Country for at least 3 years in the last 4 years prior to the call deadline.

To be eligible, applicants must have at least 4 years of research experience or be holders of a doctorate (experienced researchers).
AstroFIt supports career development plans, with training provided also for non-scientific and complementary skills.

AstroFIt 1st call creceived a total of 70 applications and at the end 6 Incoming Mobility fellowships and 1 Reintegration Fellowship were assigned.

AstroFIt 2nd call was devoted to post-doc researchers with less than 8 years post-PhD activity. The National Institute for Astrophysics received 60 applications and at the end 7 Incoming Mobility Fellowships were assigned.
