Estimation of atmospheric moisture at the air-sea interface on the Mediterranean and Black Sea using IR satellite data

Final Report Summary - MASIMBIRS (Estimation of atmospheric moisture at the air-sea interface on the Mediterranean and Black Sea using IR satellite data)

The MASIMBIRS project (https://sites.google.com/site/masimbirs/) provided support for reintegration of the grantee in the research department of the National Meteorological Administration in Romania. Through the scientific topic proposed, related to air-sea interaction over Mediterranean and Black Sea, the project aligned to the research interests of the Host and offered to the grantee the opportunity to consolidate her position in the Climate Unit. The scientific goal of the project regards the investigation of two methods for estimating moisture at the air-sea interface, for Mediterranean and Black Seas, using information derived from infrared (IR) satellite observations. The activity during the second period of implementation focused on a Look-Up-Table (LUT) estimation method. The work included the analysis of the impact of optimized databases of vertical moisture profiles on the method performance and the investigation of different definition of IR channel weights in the selection procedure. A version of the LUT method was made available on the project site. The project provided support for caring out the specific research topic described, as well as for strengthening the cooperation within Host institution, by collaborating into other two international projects. The project contributed significantly to improve working and life conditions of the grantee and to enhance the opportunities for obtaining a higher scientific position within the Host institution.
