Objectif
Prophecies of the impact of science in the 21st century are awesome. Global warming, new medicines, etc. will all impact the general public. The main audio-visual media, television and internet, have a huge responsibility and opportunity to engage the pu blic's interest.
This project will prepare a strategy prior to FP7 to harness the appeal of popular strands of TV to create a new awareness and interest in science. It will reflect the new philosophy of "science in society" with a focus on science in TV programmes rather than committed science programmes which often play to the converted.
The aim is to find creative ways of introducing much more science into Drama, Wildlife programmes and Sports, which command huge audiences.
This project will bring to gether in a two day event leading European actors, notably TV executives, scientists, science communicators, TV writers and producers.
The event will be held at the European Science Congress, ESOF 2006, with many actors present. AV examples to inspire discussion will be:
a) The EuroPAWS Project, whose action research on TV Drama made an important start on this agenda in FP6. Examples from its Docu-Drama festival will attract TV people to sample new ways to project science for large audiences, and fuel their own imagination.
b) The European Physical Society pilot project linking science to natural phenomena using a TV web package, linking method and content
c) A specific science strand, Space Science, to survey all TV/web options.
The event focuses on how the aim of bringing science into popular European TV can be furthered in the context of FP7. Models will be explored for European collaboration, how best practice can be spread and how targeted money can act as a catalyst. The goal will be to produce an agenda for the coming years and a set of outline project proposals for FP7 that are feasible and imaginative and to present these in a report for all actors and those shaping FP7.
