Nonlinear super focusing in plasmonic systems

Final Report Summary - NONLINSUPFOC (Nonlinear super focusing in plasmonic systems)

We developed the formulation to study extreme manipulations of weak and intense short pulses in optical waveguides such as reversed waves, slow and stopped light using nonlinear optics. We completed the study of reversed waves, but the study of pulse propagation in the slow and stopped light regime proved to be much more complicated, so that we are only in initial stages of the implementation of the derived formulation.
We also studied the analogue particle (nano-antennae) geometry. For the first time, we employed the technique of transformation optics to nonlinear optical media. The complexity of the problem required us several steps of simplification, as well as adoption of advanced semi-analytical techniques. Preliminary results indicate on some new physical insights, quite general and fundamental to the problem. In addition, we found that the standard numerical software in use in the community fail to model the relevant physical scenarios. Thus, as a preliminary step, we developed a simple solution to this problem that can rely on the existing software settings. We are now ready to finish the study of the physical aspects of the problem.
Finally, we performed a detailed study of the slow nonlinearity of metals, specifically, based on the thermal response.
The study of all these topics will be pursued in the future by my research group.
