The GeopolyConc project has led to major advances in the ability to understand, and so design, durable low-carbon concretes using alkali-activation technology. We have shed new light on the role of alkali-activated cement microstructure and chemistry in defining concrete durability, developed new cements that are even more carbon-efficient than those which came before, and built a new understanding of how cement chemistry can be used to protect steel reinforcement in service in highly durable, highly sustainable, innovative concretes.
