Environmental Risk Management for Contaminated Marsh Land in Khanty-Mansiysk

Objective

Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug (KMAO) -Ugra in Russia faces a strong demand for efficient remediation strategies for oil contaminated marshes. KMAO is an important oil producer with regions that have large contaminated sites due to the oil production and transportation.

The project aims to establish a strong research network with partners from Europe and Russia in order to help identify gaps and to supply the needed knowledge for improvement and development of regional strategy and a risk management system for oil contaminated marshes.

The core activities in the project are Knowledge mapping and exchange Development of Research and Innovation strategy Networking and information Project management The knowledge mapping will contain international and regional knowledge and experience with focus on risk assessment tools, re-mediation technologies and natural attenuation and monitoring.

It will be investigated, to which extent existing methods can be used for the pre-requisites of the contamination problems with the given pre-requisites in climate, geology etc. Results from European research work will be taken into account, e.g. EuroRisk, Eurodemo, European tools can be improved.

Based on the results of the knowledge mapping a research and innovation strategy will be developed, presented for a larger number of stakeholders and information will be spread to other oil contaminated regions. A research network with Russian and European participants will be established for further co-operation. Co-operation with or integration into the European NICOLE network will be investigated.

The project will also facilitate the development and introduction of technologies on re-cultivation of oil-polluted lands under these pre-requisites, improvements the region towards sustainable development, and facilitating the technology transfer from EU environmental technology companies. The project will be performed taking EU soil policy into account.
