Expanding membrane macroscale applications by exploring nanoscale material properties

Final Report Summary - NANOMEMPRO (Expanding membrane macroscale applications by exploring nanoscale material properties)

The NANOMEMPRO project was a joint initiative of thirteen European partners and constitutes the European Network of Excellence (NoE) which pertains to membrane science and technology.

The main objectives of the project are threefold, namely the enhancement of the co-ordination in research activities which concern membrane science and technology, for example, by offering related Master's and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, the enlargement of worldwide collaboration of experts active in the related field as well as the development of strong links with European industry, especially with Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The main achievements stemming from the activities of NANOMEMPRO are listed below:
- All activities with regard to membrane science and technology in Europe have been made visible to the scientific community and the membrane-technology industry due to the staff mobility, the organisation of meetings as well as the co-operation between different research groups;
- NANOMEMPRO established an interaction between membrane researchers, membrane-technology industries and end-users in order to inform of any research activity as well as to handle any issue;
- A legal entity, the so-called European Membrane House (EMH) sustains NANOMEMPRO's activities and created a European membrane technology platform;
- NANOMEMPRO covered the need for an interdisciplinary approach regarding the use of membranes in medical applications.
