Cel Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the most common cause of death in adults world-wide, as well as in the Netherlands. Blood vessel properties in general, and vascular wall pressure in particular, could indicate risks for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). P ie Medical, CARIM (Maastricht University) and TU/e (Technical University Eindhoven) provide in this project a high-level training program targeted at ultrasound measurement of bloodvessel wall properties as potential predictors for CVD. Research themes wil l be, amongst others, the transfer of three basic clinical research methods (heterogeneity, local pressure, baroreflex sensitivity) into the ultrasound arterial analyser (ART.LAB) system and the research on new materials for the development of ultrasound s ensors. The research co-operation of Pie Medical, CARIM and TU/e offers an opportunity to train the fellows in scientific research skills, the transfer of theoretical insights into industrial concepts, and the evaluation of the diagnostic value. Moreover, the fellows are offered extensive general (marketing, quality systems, research management), basic (ultrasound systems, physiology/biophysics, cardiovascular pharmacology, molecular biology, biomedical research) and advanced (thrombosis and haemostasis, ca rdiac function, vascular biology) training courses. The training is embedded in the organisations of Pie Medical, CARIM and TU/e. The personal supervision and tutoring will be performed by a highly experienced training team. The training outcome of this re search-training project should be a successful completion of a PhD thesis for all 4 fellows. The last year of the expected 4 years required for PhD completion will be funded by the research group.
