Smart Vital Signs and Accident Monitoring System for Motorcyclists Embedded in Helmets and Garments for eCall Adaptive Emergency Assistance and Health Analysis Monitoring

Cel

Reduction of fatalities in motorcycles accidents is still an unaccomplished task, accounting for 16% of the total number of road accident fatalities. Motorcycle is the only mode of transport for which the number of fatalities has increased over the last eight years. It is urgent to develop solutions to increase motorcycle riders’ safety and provide them to the market. The main goal of the project is “to enhance eCall with vital signs data of the riders and overcome the limitations of existing motorcycle eCall systems”. Vital signs information after an accident can be used by medical services in order to prepare an adequate emergency response. With i-VITAL, we will create a novel vital sign monitoring and accident detection system to be seamlessly integrated into helmets and garments. Moreover, since the helmet and garment will be with the rider at all times, the accident information it can provide (location and severity) is much more accurate that the systems attached to motorbikes. Besides, the rider will always be able to talk with the emergency services thanks to integrated headphones for audio calls, even though the motorcycle may fall away after the accident. Safety systems should be highly reliable at all times, so i-VITAL will develop and integrate energy harvesting capabilities in order to maximize the on time of the system. i-VITAL will also develop techniques that continuously analyse vital data in real-time and warn the rider in order to prevent possible accidents or health hazards.
