EU-CHINA Lever for IPM Demonstration

Deliverables

Field demonstration yearly report - year 2

Description: Every year, a field demonstration report describing the evolution of the trials and the demonstration/field days organised by the partners in Europe and China will be published on the website and disseminated to a large audience (i.e. newsletter / mailing list)

BCAs optimised use for pest containment on leafy vegetables, tomatoes and vineyards

Description: Guidelines on the optimised use of BCAs (and combination thereof) to guarantee a successful bio-control of pests on various cultures

Increased efficiency of micro BCAs against Botrytis through entomovectoring in tomatoes and grapes

Description: The potential of the entomovectoring of a selection of micro BCAs with use of bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) against grey mould Botrytis cinerea in tomatoes in greenhouses will be tested. A bumblebee-specific dispenser as developed by the UGENT-partner can be used (Mommaerts et al., 2010). This dispenser will be filled with formulated micro BCA. We will use a setup with randomized blind blocks as published before in Mommaerts et al. (2012). A similar setup will be used for micro BCAs in grapes in open field. Here we plan to use hives of honeybees (Apis mellifera) and a specific honeybee-dispenser that can be attached to a commercial honeybee hive and that is available in the market (Smagghe et al., 2012).

Analyses of pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables 2

Description: Reports of the pesticide residues analysis will be published on year 3 and 4 and compared together for a better acceptance of the solutions by end-users including farmers and civil society.

Field demonstration yearly report - year 3

Description: Every year, a field demonstration report describing the evolution of the trials and the demonstration/field days organised by the partners in Europe and China will be published on the website and disseminated to a large audience (i.e. newsletter / mailing list)

Recommendation to policy-makers

Description: A document providing scientific support to the development of relevant National, European and Chinese policies will be produced. The document will target policy-makers and will be written taking into account their point of view.

Field demonstration yearly report- year 1

Description: Every year, a field demonstration report describing the evolution of the trials and the demonstration/field days organised by the partners in Europe and China will be published on the website and disseminated to a large audience (i.e. newsletter / mailing list)

Potential for RNAi as a pest control strategy

Description: The potential for RNAi as a pest control strategy against moths (notably Tuta absoluta and Lobesia botrana) and whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) will be assessed. Target genes will be selected based on selectivity and efficacy and optimal doses and concentrations will be determined. Additionally, an optimisation of the delivery method and formulation will be carried out based on what is already known from literature

Guidelines on use of compost for controlling plant diseases

Description: guidelines detailing the use of compost to suppress soil-borne diseases, with focus on quality control, suppressive compost available on the market and composting at farm level, efficacy of microbial fortified compost for controlling plant diseases, compost amendments to be used in nurseries as partial substitutes for peat and other substrates with consequent advantages in terms of cost, production and environmental impact

Paternal Effect Lethality based SIT against P. xylostella

Description: the Paternal Effect Lethality (PEL) phenotype – repressible male ‘sterility’ - will be developed and proven in P. xylostella, with a view to combining with female-lethality (previously developed).

Benefits of IPM to end-users

Description: A document providing scientific relevant information on environmental, social, and economic impacts of pest management and IPM methods will be produced, also addressing consumers and policy-makers.

Feasibility study on SIT-based approaches for management of key pests

Description: Report on the feasibility of SIT-like approaches for control of key pests of tomato, grape and leafy vegetables (e.g. Tuta absoluta, Lobesia botrana and Delia radicum), notably potential for laboratory mass rearing, knowledge required on field biology, compatibility of current/future IPM methods and economic justifiability.

Rationalisation of use of pesticides according to community ecology-based pest population dynamic estimates

Description: the knowledge gained on pest population dynamics when multiple different pest types experience uni- and/or bi-directional agonistic interactions will be used to reduce frequency of pesticide applications (notably fungicides owing to negative indirect interactions between herbivores and plant pathogens).

Elaboration of IPM packages

Description: Different IPM methodologies analysed in task 3.2 will be carefully grouped in IPM packages in order to proceed with the testing in the farms.

Increased biocontrol services against key pests through new crop assemblages

Description: Guidelines for crop assemblages promoting spill-over of key BCAs from surrounding crops and habitats toward EUCLID-targeted crops (tomato, grape and leafy vegetables). Evaluation of the reduction in pesticide usage on EUCLID-targeted crops and at the farm level (multi crops) in general.

Update of IPM packages

Description: Different IPM methodologies analysed in task 3.2 will be carefully grouped in IPM packages in order to proceed with the testing in the farms.

New micro and macro BCAs and botanical pesticides against key pests in tomatoes, leafy vegetables and grapes

Pest management methods relying on the use of botanical insecticides and newly developed micro and macro BCAs; all methods will meet requirements for being use in organic farming cropping systems (e.g. on tomato and leafy vegetables)

International conference minutes

Description: Final conference to present the project’s results to the various stakeholders of the project.

Analyses of pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables 1

Description: Reports of the pesticide residues analysis will be published on year 3 and 4 and compared together for a better acceptance of the solutions by end-users including farmers and civil society.

Project flyer

Description: A flyer will be edited targeting different end-users, with different approach, content and objectives. The means will not only advertise the project, but will present the domain of IPM at large.

Brochure to farmers on IPM guidelines, best technologies and use
