Camelina & crambe Oil crops as Sources for Medium-chain Oils for Specialty oleochemicals

Leistungen

C18-C22 monounsaturated FA samples

These fractions are obtained as a result of the oil enrichment through short path distillation, cold precipitation, molecular distillation, and other separation technologies as SFE/SCE or bio-enzymatical techniques. After this enrichment and apart from the monounsaturated fractions, PUFAS will be also obtained, which will be subsequently fractionated. A report showing the conclusions of the fractionation will also be delivered.

15 tons of seeds

15 tons of seeds in total will be produced in Greece, Italy and Poland from the large fields. The extracted oil will serve the industrial transformation tests of WP4. This deliverable is linked to Task 3.6.

C18 PUFA and MUFA/esters samples

These samples are the result of fractioning the PUFAs obtained after the oil enrichment through short path distillation, cold precipitation, molecular distillation, and supercritical techniques. The objective is adding value in order to define a quality level up to the market standards. A report showing the conclusions of the fractionation will also be delivered.

Products derived from crambe and camelina which mimic palm kernel and coconut oil derivatives

Products derived from crambe and camelina which mimic palm kernel and coconut oil derivatives will be obtained from tasks 6.2, (more specifically 6.2.2 and 6.2.3), and Task 6.4.1 and derivatives in task 6.4.2. These are aiming to address similar markets than the Palm Kernel and Coconut oils, so should correspond mostly to C10-C12 and C14 fatty acids and derivatives. Samples will be produced (up to a level of 100 kg pilot plant) at a TRL of 5 to 6. These compounds will be compared to products derived from Palm kernel and coconut oils by project participants and/or advisory board members. In this deliverable we will assess the market demand in terms of product quality and fatty acid composition, and we will try to deliver the right products.

Large-scale fields and growing guidelines for each crop

Large-scale fields of 5-10 hectares will be established in Greece, Italy and Poland for each crop to assess the adaptability and workability of existing farm machines commonly used for oilseed crops, estimate the labour demand, assess the economic and environmental impacts, measure the actual biomass and oil yields, and yield gap, verify operational feasibility under real farm conditions, identify problems and come up with solutions. This deliverable is linked to Task 3.6.

List of molecules from the value chains that can be used as flavour and fragrance ingredients

"A list of molecules from the value chains that can be used as flavour and fragrance ingredients will be prepared, using on one side the catalogues of molecules which are used in F&F applications (such as the Aldrich catalogue for F&F, or the web site ""thegoodscentscompany.com""...) and the expertise of the partners in chemical synthesis to identify which molecules could be synthesized from the Camelina and Crambe fatty acids. By analogy, we'll identify which new molecules, similar to the previous ones, could also be synthesized, in order to include them in the portefolio of molecules that could be proposed to F&F companies. Whenever these molecules will be encountered in the project, they will be isolated, for further evaluation by selected F&F and advisory board members. Tasks lined to this deliverable are Task 6.1, task 6.2 and Task 6.3"

Sustainable crop rotation strategies

Sustainable crop rotation strategies will focus on best crop sequencing in new cropping systems. The rotational effects of the selected crops on crop yield, nitrates and organic matter restitution of food crops will be investigated under different pedo-climatic conditions across Europe. Monocultures will be compared with two different crop rotations. This deliverable is linked to Task 3.5.

Maps for camelina and crambe cultivation

Maps with suitable climatic zones for the cultivation of camelina and crambe in Europe will be developed. The analysis of land availability will be based on spatial agro-climate data and performed in GIS software (global positioning system type). Databases like Corine Land Cover, Soil Geographical Database, etc. will be used in order to identify the land conditions. The deliverable is linked to Task 3.1.

This report includes all major findings of all tasks of this work package, namely on technological, environmental, economic, solcial and political aspects. These findings are supplemented by additional sustainability impacts being assessed in the integrated sustainability assessment. Finally conclusions and recommendations will be given.

Final Report: Economic assessment of the COSMOS value chains

Final Report: Economic assessment of the COSMOS value chains. This deliverable will provide the final results of the economic assessment (Task 7.4). This task will give a clear picture of the economic implications of the COSMOS value chains identified in task 7.1 by two main parts: A detailed market and competition analysis (1) for all value chains will be conducted to get an overview of the markets of the products focused on by the COSMOS project. This involves a literature review, interviews and workshops. Both typical competing raw materials (tropical plant oils) and conventional products (chemicals from petroleum) will be included as references. Furthermore a life cycle costing (LCC) and techno-economic evaluation (TEE) (2) analyses the economic performance of a production chain on a life cycle basis. It uses economic indicators such as investment cost, production costs, product costs and target costing, internal rate of return and external costs. If applicable, green premium costs will be assessed. The
