Design and Fabrication of Functional Surfaces with Controllable Wettability, Adhesion and Reflectivity

Livrables

Condensation

To develop innovative and advanced techniques for functional surface water condensation, and further establish the knowledge for heat exchange devices and anti-ice applications.

Bacteria growth control

To carry out research on (1) Influences of the surface wettability and energy on bacteria growth control; (2) Development of durable anti-bacterial surfaces; (3) Qualitative and quantitative analyses and prediction on the bacterial adhesion; (4) Surface signalling and electrical response for bacteria growth; (5) Nano patterned surfaces for plasmon based biochemical sensors and waveguides which can be used for detecting bacterial and virus.

Surface metrology and characterisation

Develop innovative and advanced techniques that are utilized to measure and characterise the functional surfaces, and to establish the key enabling technique for high fidelity and efficient metrology.

Functional surface modelling and representation

The functional surfaces exhibited by some soil-burrowing insects for their anti-adhesion/anti-contamination performances will be studied and the advanced knowledge between the surface topography and the wettability will be established; The theoretical models for the patterned surface with mutiscale features will be investigated for developing the controllable wettability surfaces; Influences of the pillar shape on the wettablility, adhesion and reflectivity will be explored; Besides the analytical analysis, the MD (Molecular dynamics) and LBM (Lattice Bloltzmann Method) will also be utilized to analyze and predict the performance of the designed functional surfaces; Bionic methodologies for generate and represent the functional surfaces will be studied.

Medical instruments

To develop the functional surfaces for medical surgery tools and devices.

Nano characterisation and testing

To carry out research on (1) Mechanical characterization of patterned surfaces or random surfaces; (2) Adhesion and reflectivity metrology and characterisation of functional surfaces; (3) Wear durability and wettability recovery capability testing of the developed functions surfaces; (4) Bacterial adhesion and growth on the functional surfaces; and (5) ice-formation and water condensation.

Correlation between surface topography and functions

To conduct the modelling and characterisation of functional surfaces, and to establish the relationship between surface features and the functional performance.

Mechanical machining method

To use the mechanical machining technologies including milling, turning, grinding, as well as the WEDM for functional surface fabrication.

Surface coating

To develop the surface coating technologies for further improve the superhydrophobicity and/or superhydrophilicity of the functional surfaces.

Agriculture devices

To develop the bionic agricultural machinery to solve the problems of adhesion and resistance for soil-engaging tillage components. Based on the obtained key enabling technique, this task will investigate the design and fabrication methodologies of agricultural components.

To develop innovative and advanced techniques for laser based micro-fabrication of functional surfaces
