Automatic Polishing System for Improving Surface Quality in Mould and Optics Industries

Objective

The objective of the APSIS project is to develop an open control system for an automatic polishing machine using the strategies and models defined in BRITE project 2362 (MACPOP). The polishing machine will be used for high-precision optics applications such as spheric and aspheric mirrors, laser mirrors, lenses for microlithography, interferometry and air-to-surface cameras, and for moulds for optical pieces such as spectacles and car headlights.

The project will develop the electronics hardware and software to control a polishing robot whose mechanical concepts have already been defined. Work includes:

- developing devices and interfaces to measure surface shape and quality
- enhancing the modelling of the polishing process
- integrating deterministic and heuristic knowledge in order to control the polishing process

All these developments will be integrated and tested in a prototype under manufacturing conditions. The results of the project will be incorporated in control boards, software and polishing machines, which will be exploited by members of the consortium.
