Periodic Reporting for period 1 - Eye Light (Eye fundus colour images enhancement service for Diabetic Retinopathy diagnosis)

Berichtszeitraum: 2016-03-01 bis 2016-08-31

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), that can affect 30 % of people who have Diabetes, is one of the main cause of visual impairment in the world.
The only way to detect DR is to perform regular eye fundus exams for every diabetic patient. As the diagnosis is based on eye fundus images, their quality is a key element for a reliable diagnosis. However, due to the intrinsic characteristics of the eye and due to the acquisition conditions the quality of the image varies making the diagnosis difficult and dependant of the operator.
With Eye-Light, iPRI has developed a technology to enhance and standardise the quality of the eye fundus images. This technology makes the diagnosis better.
As the number of diabetic patients is increasing everywhere in the world, DR screening is essential. However, the quality of images are not sufficient in many high-income countries and very limited in many low-income countries. Eye Light makes the diagnosis more robust and possible for many images acquired in harsher conditions.
Key Opinion Leaders have confirmed the interest of Eye Light technology. IPRI now wants to propose this technology as a professional service.
The work during phase 1 project has allowed to reach the following results:
1) Study of the environment of DR screening
2) Preparation of an action plan to obtain the CE marking for a medical device
3) Preparation of a clinical validation
Eye-Light is a solution that drastically improves the quality of the diagnosis. Eye Light works for all kind of camera equipment. Eye-light is expected to create a breakthrough in the massive screening of DR by standardising the quality of eye fundus images, allowing comparison and making the images sharable.
In terms of socio-economic impact, Eye light is expected to improve the early diagnosis of diabetes. It will participate to the prevention of blindness. In high-income countries, Eye light will make the screening services more efficient and more accurate. In addition, Eye light will create new high-qualified jobs in Europe.
