Objective
Development, on continuously cast billets of not more than 150 mm square, of special steels whose casting conditions have not so far been mastered. The programme involves conducting tests on an industrial scale in five German steelworks on qualities as varied as tool steels, structural steels with boron, ferritic and martensitic chromium steels, austenitic and austenitic-ferritic steels and steels for seamless tubes. These tests will relate to control of the ladle metallurgy and the casting techniques: mould geometry and oscillation, lubrication, secondary cooling, electromagnetic stirring and guidance with the aim of obtaining billets with a satisfactory surface condition, a fine and homogeneous solidification structure, no internal cracks prejudicial to the rolled product, and a reliable, repeatable process.
