Obiettivo
Cold forging is used, in the manufacture of a wide range of products. In particular, there are a number of designs of high value added, cold forged fasteners designed for automatic assembly machines. It is imperative that no defective fasteners are used in these machines and, consequently, the failure rate in cold forging must be zero.
The objective of this proposal is to investigate the variation of cold forging performance due to differences in alloying Type 1008 steels, steelmaking processes, billet processing and rod processing. This will involve the examination of both commercial and experimentally produced steels. The assessment will be made using critical instability strain determinations from laboratory compression test and cold forging performed in a commercial machine.
