Objective BECAUSE OF A LACK OF EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS, SOME CONSTRUCTION RULES CURRENTLY IN FORCE DO NOT ALLOW THE USE OF BUTT-WELDED ROLLED SECTIONS. THIS IS AN ECONOMIC HANDICAP FOR STEEL FRAMEWORKS SUBJECT TO FATIGUE STRESS SUCH AS RAILWAY BRIDGES, OFFSHORE STRUCTURES, HOISTING AND TRANSPORT EQUIPMENT. THE AIM OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO DETERMINE EXPERIMENTALLY THE PERMISSIBLE EFFECTIVE BENDING STRESS OF THE MOST USUAL WELDED JOINTS. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE RESULTS WILL GENERALLY OBVIATE THE NEED TO INCREASE THE THICKNESS OF THE BASE OF ROLLED SECTIONS BY WELDING ON PLATES. IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT THIS PRACTICE GREATLY REDUCES THE LEVEL OF THE PERMISSIBLE STRESS BUT MAKES THE STEEL LESS COMPETITIVE.
