Fatigue and fracture behaviour of welded joints in high strength steel

Objective

The aim of this research proposal is to investigate the fatigue behaviour of high strength steel Fe E460 in structures with plate thickness up to 70 mm for which reliable data are not presently available. Also, the probability of brittle fracture initiating from fatigue cracks will be investigated. To gain this insight into the relationship between fatigue craking and the initiation of a brittle crack under higher fatigue loads at lower temperature fatigue tests will be carried out with small 2 dimensional specimens. In these tests the influence of temperature, fatigue stress range and fracture toughness will be studied. The project will be carried out in collaboration with TU Delft, TU Eindhoven, TNO-IBDC and TNO-MI.
