Objective Research on welded joints has demonstrated that their fatigue life reduces as section thickness increases. It has been observed also that using a more realistic welded joint in which the attachment thickness is less than that of the base plate fatigue life is increased. Unfortunately insufficient data are available to quantify this effect and hence establish reliable design criteria for all loading conditions. The aim of this programme is to rectify this situation and hence help to overcome the design limitations currently imposed.
