IT IS KNOWN THAT THE RESISTANCE OF METALS TO ABRASIVE WEAR IS DEPENDENT NOT ONLY ON MACROHARDNESS BUT ALSO ON MICROSTRUCTURAL PARAMETERS OF THE MATERIAL SUCH AS MICROSTRUCTURAL HOMOGENEITY AND HETEROGENEITY, DISTRIBUTION OF HARD PHASES, TOUGHNESS, BRITTLENESS, ETC.

AS A RESULT THERE IS A GROWING INTEREST IN THE USE OF DUAL-PHASE STEELS SINCE THEY POSSESS THOUGHNESS AND THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH IN A PARTICULARLY SATISFACTORY COMBINATION. IN PARTICULAR EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES HAVE BEEN LAUNCHED UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE ECSC WITH THE AIM OF DEVELOPING HIGH-CARBON DUAL-PHASE STEELS.

MARKET RESEARCH, HOWEVER, SHOWS THAT THERE IS AT PRESENT A STRONG DEMAND FOR STEEL PLATE (ESPECIALLY LIGHT PLATE) POSSESSING HIGH WEAR RESISTANCE AND, IN ADDITION, SATISFACTORY WELDABILITY AND PLIABILITY.

FOR THESE REASONS IT IS ESSENTIAL TO ARRANGE FOR A PROGRAMME OF RESEARCH INTO THE POSSIBILITY OF DEVELOPING DUAL-PHASE STEELS WITH A MAXIMUM CARBON CONTENT OF 0.3 % WHICH POSSESS THE ABOVE MENTIONED PROPERTIES IN THE MOST SUITABLE COMBINATION.
