Obiettivo Theoretical calculations that were carried out as part of a previous research indicated that the performance of such materials should be superior, i.e. the total iron loss of the core was lower than conventional materials of this class. Such low anisotropy steels are potentially important since their use in rotating machines is widespread. Improvements in efficiency in this field of application of electro-technical steels are of importance as such gains are of considerable economic significance due to the number of such machines in use. Practical measurements, however, indicated that this superiority over conventional steels was not always shown. A number of factors are thought to be responsible for this, in particular the overall loss level, the magnetic permeability, the grain size and the type and distribution of inclusions. The aim of the proposed project is to identify those factors which adversely affect the achievement of the full potential of these low magnetic anisotropy steels and to determine how such effects may be minimised.
