Objective This research project will determine optimum specification for filler wire to provide the required weld metal properties during power beam welding operations. It may be possible to control weld properties by making use of inclusions. This is of particular importance in making power beam systems viable for large scale fabrication with the resulting economies compared to other welding systems. It is possible that the use of stable oxides in either the parent steel or filler wire could control HAZ microstructure and toughness.
