Objective The aim of the project is to gain fundamental understanding by investigating wetting and dewetting of liquid zinc on model surfaces of defined oxide/bare metal structure and to find optimal oxide/bare metal morphologies. It is planned to study the scale formation during oxidation and reduction of substrates in order to learn how to develop a process resulting in a mixed scale similar to these morphologies. Parallel to the model studies the hot dip galvanising of steels will be analysed after reduction and oxidation of the surface. The project will focus mainly on the interfacial reactions during galvanising, dependence of wettability on surface nature and preparation of optimised surfaces according to the model. Finally, a transfer of the model to the industrial HDG process and verification by industrial trials will be realised in order to optimise the surface preparation for new steels and complex alloys.
