Objective Project PP072 is a further development of project PP073. While project PP073 deals with billets whose dimensions are 70 mm x 180 mm, project PP072 covers thinner gauges (20- 35 mm strip). The work plan provides for the following phases: Phase 1: Planning the conversion of the casting machine for strip casting. This planning work includes: - the design and ordering of new dam blockettes of the same thickness as the strip to be produced; - the design and construction of a closed feeding system; design preparations for the increase in the angle of inclination of the caster. Phase 2: Conversion of the caster in line with the specifications developed in phase 1. Phase 3: Test castings with strip. In this phase, experiments will be made with changing the thickness of the strip and optimizing the feeding system. Metallurgical tests of the surface and structure are planned. Rolling tests will also be undertaken if there is sufficient stock. Phase 4: Evaluation of the overall pilot project. The assessment will be made both from the technical and the economic point of view. The funds proposed in this memorandum relate only to phase 1 which will run parallel with the work described in PP073 so that no time is lost. A starting date for this project of January 1st, 1986 is therefore proposed.
