Development of a fully closed continuous casting machine for the high speed casting of prime quality steels

Objective

The aim of this pilot project is to test a new concept of continuous casting machine in which the upper side of the mould is extended by a refractory tube connected directly to the lower part of the tundish in order to locate the steel meniscus, variations of which are the root cause of most slab surface defects, in the refractory tube instead of in the copper mould. Lubricant will be injected through the copper plate of the mould wall and oscillations replaced by low amplitude, high frequency vibrations applied to the refractory tube.
