Operation of a planetary rolling mill as a roughing stand for a rod and bar mill

Objective

The aim of the project is to construct and test a new type of universal planetary rolling mill for the rolling of blooms in rod mills. Previous universal planetary rolling mills have consisted of horizontal and vertical rolls. This arrangement often leads to edging defects. The new universal planetary mill developed by IRSID is novel in its use of grooved rolls to avoid edging defects. The blooms are fed diagonally into the rolling stand.

The project is divided into two phases: 1. Test operation at IRSID 2. Test operation on the production line of the Société des Aciéries de Montereau and installation of a production unit. The financial aid proposed relates only to the first phase of this project. This includes: - study and construction of a pilot mill at IRSID, - tests outside a production line with low rotation speed. This will serve for an investigation of the mechanical aspects of the rolling equipment, - tests at industrial rolling speed. These tests will cover both the mechanical behaviour of the rolling mill and the properties of the product, - once the initial tests have been completed, the unit will be transferred to the steelworks at Montereau and tested there outside the main production operation.
