Study of equipment to protect groups and individuals against PAH-related hazards in coking plants

Objective

Aims of project:

To identify, on the basis of scientific criteria, protective equipment for groups and individuals which is both effective and appropriate.

Focus of the research:

Current coking techniques do not enable PAHs to be kept below the recommended level.
In spite of technical improvements to the work equipment (door technology, luting, etc.), harmful substances such as PAHs are still produced.
Most workers do not wear the personal protective equipment provided, which they find unsuitable.

Methodology:

To determine actual operating modes and the factors governing exposure to dust and fumes, we initially carried out a systematic analysis of activities (postures, movements, positions, communication) under various climatic conditions (summer, autumn, winter).

A detailed literature search on physiological and psycho-physiological problems associated with the wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) will be conducted at the same time.
