The problem addressed by VR4Health is the inefficient surgery training currently existing. This is an issue for society given the high number of deaths per year due to medical errors, and on the other hand due to the lack of access to healthcare in remote and developing areas. The overall objective of our project is to develop a cloud-based platform integrating our mobile app, Surgevry, and training modules, which combined with the corresponding hardware (two operating room recording systems), will enable interactive virtual reality as a training method for complex medical applications. Thus, our products and services will revolutionize the way surgery is taught and conveyed, while offering a better training, with more flexibility and at an affordable cost.
We have already recorded surgical procedures using a prototype recording system assembled from off-the-shelf parts, which has approval in France to enter the operating room. On the other hand, we have developed a first version of Obserever option and our app Surgevry is currently commercialized in versions compatible with Android and iOS operative systems. We have attended 24 events, where we carried out dissemination of our project. We have evaluated the technical, commercial and financial risks to develop VR4Health. The analysis has convinced us that we have a strong innovative project with real success potential during the commercial exploitation of a technology that will have a significant impact for both our company and customers worldwide. End-users will benefit from an affordable and portable surgical VR training thanks to the outstanding performance of our process.
Our forecast shows that we can achieve revenues over €10 million by the fifth commercialization year (2023), and our project is expected to have a major socio-economic impact, as surgeons’ preparation will be shortened and improved before ever carrying out surgery on a patient, which will reduce deaths per year due to medical errors. Moreover, VR will reach to remote areas, thus VR4Health will improve access and quality of healthcare worldwide. End users (practicing surgeons and physicians) will be able to follow training and share content independently of the institution where they work. On the other hand, governments will be able to improve their prevention campaigns and quality of healthcare provision, while reducing training costs.
