Use of indicators of water stress in plants for the control of irrigation

Obiettivo

Owing to the problems of competition between urban and rural use of water and of pollution caused by leaching of nutrients, it is important to develop methods of managing irrigation water which minimize the amounts used and which are economic. The object is to develop a method of managing the decision making on irrigation according to some criterion of water stress in the plant.
Experiments have been carried out to relate criteria of stress in plants to relative evapotranspiration and the water content of the soil. Crop yields have been measured for various threshold values of stress used to trigger irrigation.
The project will test the links between various physical and physiological criteria and reduction in water consumption of the plants. The tests will include both annual and perennial C3 and C4 plants and will be carried out on various soil types in semi-arid areas. Results will be analysed with respect to depth of soil and rooting, potential evaporation and any reduction in productivity. Agronomic tests will also be carried out to test 'threshold' values that may be used for the control of irrigation.
