Novel modelled analogue data for more efficient exploitation of deepwater hydrocarbon reservoirs

Objective

The objective is to reduce the development costs of deep water reservoirs, and increase the success rate of wells drilled during development, by improved reservoir characterization. Fields that lie in deep water depths often consist of sediments that have been deposited in deep water. Development of deepwater reservoirs is often sanctioned on very little well data: prospects are typically evaluated with a 3D seismic survey and sparse well and core data. Therefore maximizing the use of the expensive well data and its integration with relatively low-cost data such as 3D seismic is critical. The improved reservoir characterization will be achieved by developing a predictive 3D geological model for deepwater sediments, from data collected from the world's best geological outcrop analogue for deepwater sediments, the Tanqua Basin fan complex in South Africa.
