Iraklion waste water reclamation pilot study for irrigation and ground water recharge

Objective

The main aims of the project will be:
a) To evaluate the wasterwater tertiary treatment efficiency;
b) To evaluate the effect and the safety of irrigation with reclaimed water and to develop design criteria for full scale projects;
c) To develop a model for water quality management of Finikia area, and;
d) To provide field operational experience.

For being able to implement the project the following must be accomplished:
1. Study and construction of:
a) Tertiary treatment of secondary wastewater effluent pilot plant;
b) Irrigation trials;
c) Plant tissue and product effect determination in irrigated plots;
d) Groundwater recharge experiments, and;
e) Transform and transport experiments, for various contaminants.

2. Operation and management of the above for a period of two and a half years and development of design criteria for large-scale reclamation and reuse of wastewater effluents.
