Reduction of construction debris in landfill by the application of innovative methods

Objective

RECLAIM will demonstrate innovative methodologies and techniques to recycle or dispose of construction debris arising from the demolition of major industrial facilities so as to minimise the impact on landfill.

The UK National Environmental Technology Centre has developed an innovative approach to site reclamation, based on the separation of material into treatable fractions. This work, undertaken at Warren Spring Laboratory, draws on techniques proven in the mineral recovery industry. This will be applied in a demonstration project based on ICI's Process Plant Park at Billingham. The RECLAIM team will select suitable sources of debris, will take samples in the course of an existing demolition programme, will separate those samples using an innovative suite of physical processes, will analyse the samples, will demonstrate remedial treatment, if and when the characterisation phase shows this to be necessary; and will then assess the appropriate application of all materials arising, whether for reuse/recycling or optimal disposal. Dissemination and application of results from the project will be a priority.
