Consequences of future ATM systems for air traffic controller selction andtraining

Exploitable results

The nature of air traffic control jobs is changing due to automation. For the foreseeable future, air traffic controllers will be faced with new or modified tasks as a consequence of combined requirements to control more air traffic, use new methods of data presentation and handling and use extended computer assistance. These changes will have considerable influence on the skills, knowledge and abilities an ATCO needs. With the technological advances in future ATM systems, there is a need to identify the consequences of future ATM systems on ATCO selection and training. CAST addressed the impact of technological advances in future systems on selection and training of air traffic controllers. To achieve the overall objective, the CAST project had the following sub-objectives: 1. To define the change in tasks, profile, selection and training requirements for air traffic controllers; 2. To provide a framework for recommendations for future selection and training processes, aimed at maximising training effectiveness and efficiency; 3. To provide functional requirements for the training and selection processes and associated equipment CAST results: 5 documents were produced, which may be obtained through the CAST project co-ordinator or the Project Officer. The reports will also be available from the CAST website (under construction) (http://www.nlr.nl/public/hosted-sites/cast): - CAST WP1 (1998). Current and Future ATM systems.
