BIOCHEMICAL AND BIOPHYSICAL STUDIES ON THE EFFECTS OF VERY LOW DOSES OF IONIZING RADIATION ON CELLS

Objectif

THE PROJECT AIMS TO STUDY THE MECHANISMS OF ACTION OF VERY LOW DOSES AT THE CELLULAR LEVEL. IT IS BASED ON EARLIER STUDIES ON DIFFERENT MODELS, IN PARTICULAR, PARAMECIUM TETRAURELIA, THE CYANOBACTERIA SYNECHOCOCCUS LIVIDUS AND HUMAN FIBROBLASTS. THIS WORK HAS SHOWN THAT A STIMULATION OF CELL PROLIFERATION AT LOW CHRONIC IRRADIATION (DOSE RATES 0.02-0.1 GY/Y). IN THE PRESENT PROJECT 2 MODELS ARE CONSIDERED: SYNECHOCOCCUS LIVIDUS AND HUMAN FIBROBLASTS.
The results of 4 experiments are reported.
Irradiation did not induce significant changes in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity in the cell cultures. However, the glycerine-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH) and pyruvate kinase activities appeared inhibited during the exponential growth phase (fourth day of culture). Differences were significant (p < 0.05). Enzyme activities recovered by the seventh day. In contrast, cells did not show changes of their TMPR values under irradiation compared to controls.
