Ziel
The purpose of this project is to identify the key ethical, legal and social aspects of developments in prenatal screening in order to inform public policies in the fields of public health and biomedicine. This three year project includes a series of studies to be carried out simultaneously in 4 member states, including Finland, Greece, Netherlands and UK.
These studies entail overall mapping of individual countries' services as well as legal and ethical codes; extensive literature reviews of the popular press and professional journals; surveys of key players including experts, physicians and midwives and in-depth studies of lay people's views including groups of women's and/or families with experiences of pre-pregnancy or prenatal screening. The total study months are 233, while the total cost is 1017500 ECUS, a sum for which half (508750 ecu) is applied in this proposal.
The unfolding of prenatal screening and the public awareness of this development provide a new framework for the perception of important ethical, legal and social issues.
