Practical and intelligent computer aided design for assembly objects (PICASSO) has 3 main modules:
A mechanism for building catalogues of parameterized component definitions;
a mechanism for building a catalogue of generic assembly templates;
an assembly design system that uses an assembly template and the component catalogues to guide a designer through the design of a particular member of the chosen assembly family.
The assembly design module has the following intelligent features. It checks that each component will fit with others in the assembly. Only components which will fit are presented in menus (other catalogue components are ignored). Components are automatically positioned in a 3-dimensional model, drawn on screen. Tolerances are automatically allocated based on the function of the mating between components (eg press fit, slide fit, etc).
