Cel Project achievements are coherent with the original technical objectives and consist of: - a technology for developing advanced man-machine interfaces for process supervision systems. The technology consists of a set of software tools (Toolkit) and a development methodology. It is based on five integrated systems: - a Dialogue System that is devoted to manage the interaction between the user and the Technical System. - a Presentation System that manages the communication media which are used to support interaction between the user and the system. - an Explanation System to explain and justify to the user the operation of the system he has to cope with. - a User Modelling System that deals with the capability of managing explicit, individual models of the user and of using them to tailor the interaction to the specific users needs. - a TES-modelling system to structure plant data conveniently to the needs of the end users and to catch the actual state of the technical system (TES). - two experimental applications of noteworthy complexity and wide use: one for the control system of combustion in a thermal power station (ADEPT) and the other for the control system of clinker manufacturing in cement factories. Such applications have been validated with the final users in the laboratory for two environments based on real time simulators. It is proposed to develop a generic man-machine interface system for industrial applications, the most distinctive capability of which will be to provide advice and explanation tailored to the needs and the level of skill of the operators. The system will be developed with a view to first application in two widely different, economically important industrial processes: combustion in fossil-fuel fired power plants, and clinker production in cement manufacturing. The work will use currently available information technology, including modeling techniques ande knowledge based systems, but will adopt a new approach to the use of these to ensure complete user acceptability. A distinctive feature of the project is that the basic system will be evaluated first on simulators and then on operational plants to enable the human factors impact to be fully assessed and modifications be made if needed. The two mentioned applications, which have both a considerable conomical importance, will themselves be a major outcome of the project. However they are examples of a wide range of problems in the field of industrial process applications to which the technological outcome of theproject will be applicable.
