Obiettivo Electrochemical corrosion monitoring techniques and accelerated corrosion test methods for aluminium alloys have been studied. In one part of the programme, innovative corrosion measurement techniques were applied. In this context the aim was to obtain new information about corrosion environments and mechanisms. The electrochemical techniques have been found to be useful in speeding up characterisation of material and coating performance during corrosion testing. Experienced personnel is required to assess and evaluate the electrochemical data. Hydrogen diffusion coefficients were determined in different aluminium alloys by means of permeation techniques for mechanistic studies on stress corrosion cracking (SCC).The other part involved the improvement and development of standard corrosion tests to be applied in material release and material selection as a matter of routine. The applicability, feasibility and reliability of current standard corrosion test methods were evaluated. The aim was to identify unsuitable methods, to recommend improvements and to develop new testing procedures where appropriate. The exfoliation corrosion test (EXCO) and intermittent acetic acid salt-spray test (MASTMAASIS) were found to be unreliable. Further improvement of the EXCO test has not yet proved successful. The results obtained from stress corrosion testing under alternate immersion conditions revealed that environmental control during testing is essential to obtain reproducible results. By means of the breaking load method, a ranking for SCC sensitivity can be obtained after only one week of testing.Techniques have been developed and optimised to determine the involvement of microorganisms in the corrosion of aluminium fuel tank structures and general atmospheric corrosion. The significance of microbiologically induced corrosion in general corrosion in aircraft was outlined. The corrosion promoting effects of certain groups of microorganisms were demonstrated under laboratory conditions. The results achieved will be exploited in the areas of corrosion testing techniques, maintenance of aircraft structures and for defining standards for corrosion test methods for aluminium alloys.
