Obiettivo Objectives and content This project is aimed at expanding the size of both the high-power laser diode market and the European share of this market in three ways. Firstly, it is necessary to reduce the cost of high-power laser diodes, improve production yields and increase reliability. Secondly, new markets must be opened by increasing laser output powers. Thirdly, suppliers must adopt flexible design methods, responding rapidly to the customers' needs. The consortium will seek this strategic advantage by developing robust, innovative technologies for designing, fabricating, evaluating, and screening power laser diodes. The workplan has been designed to achieve technological leaps in six key areas: - Nondestructive, large-area probing: The consortium will develop a non-destructive probe for the screening and evaluation of high-power laser diodes at realistic power levels. - Al-free laser materials and new facet mirror technologies: The consortium will improve the COD failure threshold by developing Al-free 808 nm lasers with InGaAsP materials and by developing new mirror technologies. - New quantitative characterisation techniques: The consortium will develop new techniques for quantitatively characterising laser mirrors. The new mirrors (2) will allow the comprehensive evaluation of these techniques. - Optical Mirror Evaluation Setup: To prevent damage from excessive handling and probing, these new characterisation techniques will be performed with a single Optical Mirror Evaluation Setup (OMES). - Thermal -Electrical Simulation and Modelling: The consortium will develop computer models to quantitatively explain the failure and power conversion loss mechanisms and will apply them to the new laser structures developed by the consortium using input data obtained with the new characterisation techniques. - Predictive Qualification and Screening The consortium will develop a powerful non-destructive screening methodology to achieve the goals of increased reliability, production yield and performance, while simultaneously reducing the price and time to market. This methodology will be performed using the non-destructive probe and the OMES technologies, using carefully selected new characterisation techniques. The consortium comprises an SME supplier of world-class Al-free lasers and materials (Tutcore), a major manufacturer / end-user of Al-based lasers (Thomson-TCS), a medium-sized developer / manufacturer of high-power, micro-cooled laser diode modules (Jenoptik-Laserdiode GmbH), a related industrial research laboratory expert in developing new laser structures (Thomson-LCR), a respected Electronic Engineering Department with experience in the numerical simulation of high-performance laser diodes (Univ. Poletécnica de Madrid), and an Electronic Engineering Department with recognised expertise in the characterisation of advanced optoelectronic materials and devices (Univ. of Nottingham). Most participants are bilingual and many have worked in other European countries.
