Fully Automatic System for Three-dimensional Flow Simulations

Objectives and content

The objective of the proposed cooperative research is the development, validation and exploitation of a fully automatic CFD-system based on Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations applicable to complete aircraft configurations. The CFD-system will have to satisfy two basic requirements for industrial CFD:

- CFD-problem-turnaround-time of a day to a week (or less) for very complex geometries (including fully automatic grid generation).

- High accuracy of aerodynamic entities (forces and pressures). Emerging CFD-methods based on hybrid body-fitted grids of tetrahedral and prismatic cells using unstructured data storage schemes have the potential to satisfy these two basic requirements mentioned above. Extensive industrial experience with current CFD technology (multi-block structured grid methods for viscous flows) learns that the problem-turnaround-time for generation of grids for Euler/Navier-Stokes calculations of complex aircraft configurations is large. In order to efficiently contribute to aircraft design the
problem-turnaround-time must be reduced to the order of a day to a week. High accuracy of aerodynamic forces is especially important so that the computed lift, drag and pitching moment can be relied upon to reduce the risks involved in aircraft design.

The first requirement is an unique feature of the present proposal, and is absolute] essential to the competitiveness of aircraft companies, which is increasingly determined by the ability to reduce time-to-market and to lower costs.

The second key innovative aspect of this FASTFLO proposal is the joint European development of a common CFD system. The common CFD system is the major deliverable of the project and will be ready for European wide dissemination after the completion of the project. The aspect of the dissemination policy is quite innovative if compared with ECARP (European Computational Aerodynamics Research Project) in which 36 individual organizations each worked towards their own CFD system, and did not plan any economies of scope). The present FASTFLO proposal guarantees large economies of scope (sharing out the development of different parts of the CFD system to the partners). Partners of the FASTFLO Common Code Consortium will achieve scale economies due to the fact that the fixed costs associated with the development and validation of the common CFD-system are shared.
The FASTFLO consortium consists of just 6 partners: three research establishments (DLR, NLR, FFA), two aircraft manufacturing companies (Daimler Benz Aerospace and Saab Scania A.B.) and an engineering company (Ingenieur Büro Kretzschmar; SME). The small absolute size of this consortium is a necessity because common code development is characterized by highly-interdependent work packages. The estimated direct economic impact of the FASTFLO project amounts to a reduction of costs totalling 3.9 MECU for the period 1998 through 2002. The estimated potential economic impact of a subsequent industrial FASTFLO project amounts to a reduction of costs larger than 30 MECU for the five year period 2000 through 2004.

The level of technical risk of the proposed project is negligibly small in terms of uncertainly concerning the demand of aerospace companies; all companies are under market pressures to reduce time-to-market and lower costs to design aircraft.
