Cel
The aim of the project is to decrease the jet diameter of abrasive waterinjection jets (AWIJ) by developing a new cutting head. The decrease of the jetdiameter and therefore the generation of small bore holes as well as of smallwidth of cut will enable to enlarge the application of the nonpollutingabrasive water injection jet technology to new industrial sectors as well as tomachining operations not possible within existing cutting technologies. The jetdiameter of abrasive water injection jets is mainly determined by the diameter of the mixing tube. With a new concept of a mixing tube assembly it is possibleto decrease the diameter down to 0.3 mm and smaller while the smallest value ofconventional mixing tubes is 0.6 mm. The development of a cutting headgenerating small abrasive water injection jets will significantly strengthenthe competitiveness of European companies dealing with abrasive water injectionjet equipment as well as of companies using this technology for manufacturingpurposes. All industrial partners involved are SMEs with business activities inabrasive water jet technology. The involved research institute has excellentexperience in water jet technology. The research work will cover the maximumreduction of jet diameter, the optimisation of the cutting head geometry, theinfluence of size reduction on cutting performance and solutions for handlingproblems concerning the alignment of water jet nozzle and mixing tube.
