Objectif The participants n. 01, 02, 03 and 04 wish to join the Working-Group on "biomaterials for Mechanical Circulatory Support Systems" of the Concerted Action "HEART". The general objective of this working-Group is to support MCSS developers in selecting the appropriate biomaterials, and the clinical users of Mcss in controlling complications associated to the interaction between biological environment and artificial surfaces. The specific objectives for this sub-area are: a. To maintain an inventory of on-going research activities. b. To assess the use of biomaterials in MCSS, with reference to blood compatibility and infection, and long-term mechanical properties. c. To define guide-lines for selection, characterisation and testing of MCSS biomaterials. Proposed activities (as expressed bY participant 01) are described in enclosed annex A. The participant n. 05 wishes to join the Working-Group on ndevelopment of MCSS" of the Concerted Action "HEART". The general objective of this subarea is to support technological development of blood pumps with reference to pump design, transmission and transformation of energy, fluid-dynamics characteristics of pumps, control strategies, in-vitro testing and characterisation. The specific objectives for this sub-area are: a. To maintain an inventory of on-going research. b. To define guide-lines for the development of MCSS in terms of structuring, executing and documenting R&D programmes. c. To establish a conmon scientific position, from the point of view of developers and users, on the subject of MCSS regulations. proposed activities(as expressed bY participant 05) are described;n th enclosed annex B.
