Aging, health and competence

Ziel

The objective of the additionally proposed EC concerted action on Gerontology (EUGERON) is to develop a knowledge base about the conditions of health and functioning that promote or inhibit the independent living in relation to age. This knowledge is necessary to develop realistic public policy in aging societies and to guide the enhancement of competence and . quality of life of aging persons in different geographic and socio-economic European settings.
EUGERON is designed originally as a cross-sectional, base-line study in longitudinal perspective. The central research question concerns the relation between age (independent variable) and competence (dependent variable) and the extent to which intervening factors, i.e. sociodemographic, environmental psychosocial, biophysiologic and life-style factors, are related to the observed differences with age.
In order to answer this question a field survey of the home visit type will be conducted on a representative community based sample of around 3000 individuals, aged 35-84 per participating EU country. The survey will be split up in a (semi) structured interview (1% hr. max.) on the 3000 sample, and an instrumental examination (1 hr. max.) on a small subsample (N=600). A similar survey study will be conducted on a smaller scale per participating PECO country.
The additional EUGERON project is scheduled for 30 months of research, and will be conducted in two phases on the basis of workshops and expert meetings: (1) develop research protocol, including manual of operations, (2) conduct pilot study. Project results will be disseminated in reports, journals and proceedings of the planned European Conference on Aging, Health and Competence.
To carry out the additional project a financial contribution of ECU is requested from EC.After the end of the additional Droiect the studv will be continued as a cross-sectional, base-line investigation in longitudinal perspective.
