Advanced environmentally friendly composite materials for the furniture and construction industries

Objective

A large number of resin additives, fibre-resin coupling agents and potential cross-linkers of UF resin have been tested and promising systems have been identified. The cost increase induced was also taken into consideration.
The incorporation of modified phenolic compound into low molar ratio UF resin improved resin performance and may be able to provide enhanced board properties.
Several pre-treatment regimes were used to improve the compatibility of wheat straw with UF resins.
The chemithermomechanical treatment of straw was the most promising method found, increasing the bonding strength and water resistance of the boards produced with either UF, PMDI, PF or TF resin. Hence, a new technique for the production of strong straw boards has been developed. The simultaneous addition of resin and hardener during this treatment helps to reduce the number of processing steps in board manufacture. The boards obtained approach the quality of medium density fibreboards.
Particleboards were effectively produced, by substituting part of the wood chips with pre-treated straw fibres, on industrial scale. The advantage is an improvement of board general appearance as well as board machinability.
