Cel
The aim of the project is to develop a system able to transform natural gas decompression energy into electrical energy at the point where the gas is taken from the high pressure grid. The present natural gas decompression process uses a laminated reducer and the decompression energy is wasted. The proposed turbo-expansion system is expected to produce electricity with an efficiency of 80%.
Due to difficulties with authorisation, the construction on the site did not start till 1990. The expander generator was installed by early 1992.
The process of producing electrical energy from natural gas decompression energy consists of several phases. Firstly, the gas is heated from 10 deg.C to 93 deg.C in order to prevent the formation of methane hydrates when the gas temperature decreases due to decompression. This heating will be done by a boiler with a natural gas burner with a nominal rating of 320,000 KCAL/HR. Secondly, the gas is fed to a single stage turbine where the pressure reduces from 60 bar to 5 bar. The gas temperature after the turbine is 7 deg.C. This turbine drives a generator which produces three-phase electricity at 380 v. which is then transformed to 2000 v. and fed to the local distribution network. The system will function for rates of gas flow of between 35% and 130% of the nominal flow rate of 7000 NMC/H. If at any time the flow rate is outside of these limits then the gas will be fed to the existing lamination reducer.
A testing and measurement period of one year is forseen during which data onall aspects of the system will be collected.
