Objectif BIOMASS GASIFICATION FOR PRODUCING SYNGAS APPEARS BEING THE MOST ECONOMICAL UNDER PRESSURE AROUND 3 MPA. BUT EFFECTS OF PRESSURE ON WOOD GASIFICATION HAVE TO BE DETERMINED. FOR THIS AIM, A THERMOBALANCE IS USED ALLOWING TO WORK AT TEMPERATURE UP TO 1000 CELSIUS DEGREES AND PRESSURES UP TO 3 MPA. IT CONSISTS OF A REFRACTORY STEEL TUBE, ELECTRICALLY HEATED AND SWEPT UPWARDS BY A FIXED FLOW OF A SPECIFIC GAS (N2, CO2). A STEAM GENERATOR, PRODUCING SUPERHEATED STEAM UNTIL 600 CELSIUS DEGREES AND 3 MPA WITH A MAXIMUM FLOW 10 KG/H HAS BEEN DESIGNED AND WILL BE SET UP IN THE NEXT MONTHS. EXPERIMENTS ARE CARRIED OUT ON WOOD OR CHARCOAL SAMPLES IN ISOTHERMAL CONDITIONS. GASIFICATION PROCEEDS IN TWO STAGES AND PYROLYSIS IS THE FIRST ONE. THIS IS A THERMAL DEGRADATION WHICH DOESN'T DEPEND ON THE NATURE OF THE SURROUNDING GAS AND THEN CAN BE STUDIED ONLY UNDER NITROGEN ATMOSPHERE. THIS STUDY ON THE THERMOBALANCE HAS ALLOWED TO SHOW A SLIGHT INCREASE OF PYROLYSIS RATE WITH PRESSURE AS AN INCREASE OF THE YIELD IN RESIDUAL WOOD CHARCOAL. EXPERIMENTATIONS OF THE CHEMICAL STEP OF GASIFICATION WITH PURE CO2 ARE STILL UNDER WAY. AS A FIRST RESULT, THE VELOCITY OF THE GAS FLOW SEEMS TO HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON THE RATE OF THE REACTION, PROBABLY DUE TO AN EXTERNAL RESISTANCE TO MASS TRANSFER.
